Thanksgiving in VT

Thanksgiving this year was a short trip to my parents' in Vermont. It was wonderfully relaxing with no real agenda except eating and making wreaths for the next big holiday. There is so much to be thankful for in our family this year, with two new bright-eyed little girls. One was difficult in the making and the other difficult in the cooking but they both arrived within 4 weeks of one another this year, healthy and perfect. They barely acknowledge each other yet, but already they are so stinkin' cute to see together. It's just going to get more fun from here on out...

Tummy time... and then the faceplant!

And of course we are always thankful for our Aiden too... he's growing into such a nice little man lately. He has his momentary lapses in common sense, as I think most 4 year olds do, but overall he really really tries hard to be a good boy and an excellent big brother to his sister. We are very lucky. Sometimes it's hard to keep that in perspective in the rat-race of daily life that occurs between working, daycare, house chores, yardwork, finances, and feeding, bathing and raising the kids, but we are very lucky. Everyone is healthy, everyone is loved, and we have everything we need. Enough said.

Annual making of the wreaths

Aiden made his first wreath. He was so proud of it, and we have it hanging on our door at home.

At this time of year we always say goodbye to HaPa and Grandma as they migrate with the birds (though I think most birds would say they're behind the 8-ball waiting til the first week of December) to a warmer climate. The next time we see them will be in Florida in late January for a much-needed vitamin D boost. Wishing them safe travels and sunny skies when they arrive at their destination. Hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving!

Not sure who won

Haley is happy one moment...

Then we get the pouty face the next. We'll need to keep our eye on this one!

What a belly!

Trail of Turkeys

Aiden and I shared a Thanksgiving family tradition with his class at Windy Hill this week... apple turkeys! There are many different versions of this craft out there, but ever since I was a child we made ours with apples, cranberries, raisins and mini-marshmallows. It was a sort of controlled chaos in the art room at Windy Hill as 15 kids stuck the four ingredients together in every conceivable combination using only toothpicks and their imaginations. Some turkeys had 100 legs, others a single feather, and still others were covered completely with gorgeous mallow plumage. Few of the creations were recognizable as turkeys to anyone but their owners, but that was definitely not the point. We had lots of fun, ate lots of mini-marshmallows, and shared something we love. At the end of the visit, we lined all the turkeys up in the school's foyer so that everyone could see the lovely trail of turkeys as they walked in. Hopefully we can share something else again soon. Happy Thanksgiving!

Haley's Best Behavior

Andy and I are convinced that Haley either doesn't like her parents very much or is completely bored of them. Every time anyone else is around, she's all smiles and giggles... life is roses and rainbows. At her daycare they always comment on what an incredibly happy girl she is... and then we get her alone in the car on the way home... WAHHHHHHH!!!! Or once we're home she'll just decide to scream for an hour, while we rush around trying to figure out how or who or what will make her happy again.

Take this weekend, for example. Grandpa Dada came up to spend the weekend with us and bring up some things that have been taking up space in Dan & Paulette's garage for months. Haley was an ANGEL... not a frown in sight. She laughed and smiled for a whole 48 hours straight. Then Grandpa Dada left, and WAAAHHHHHHHHH!!!!! It's uncanny. Are we that bad?

Grandpa Dada's visit was uber-productive, as usual. Aiden helped his dad and Grandpa build a series of boardwalks between our raised garden beds, which will hopefully mean less mowing and (maybe) fewer slugs next year. In any case, they look really nice, and were very affordable since we used the lumber from our old deck. After the boys came back inside to warm up (it was a chilly 2 days), Aiden also had a great time reading with Grandpa Dada, and playing legos and building cities out of blocks. Haley, as I mentioned earlier, just smiled at everything. It was a great weekend.

November, Half Over

As we slide down into winter it seems the days are slipping faster and faster... until I'm sure they will hit a wall when it drops into the 20s and start to crawl by inch by inch, pretty much through to March. That's how it goes around here. This week was absolutely gorgeous though, a last taste of the warm season, plenty of sunshine and temps mild enough to go without a jacket most of the time. We enjoyed it as much as possible, with both Andy and I getting out into the field multiple times for work, and lots of outdoor time on the weekend. We waited this year until really late to rake our leaves off the lawn... to that point where they don't really look like full leaves anymore but are more like curled, dried husks. Not as much fun for raking huge leaf piles and jumping in them, but it did seem like there were less of them to rake up.

Really not much else going on here. Things have been a bit less hectic and we've been sticking close to home. We had a nice dinner at our friends' house this weekend, took Aiden swimming at the pool, went out for breakfast, and laughed frequently at Haley who has recently become enamored with her own voice. She loves to talk to us, very enthusiastically, about whatever she is seeing or doing. Too bad we don't speak baby, as Aiden says.
